The curse of the second-itus continues

19/09/2011

Quiz Mistress ran an awesome race from the front last Saturday under Cathy Gannon but was passed in the closing stages and had to settle for second place again. This filly has really found her form of late and we couldn’t be happier. She has come out of her race fresh and well and holds a very tentative entry for Chester on Saturday.
Continuing the second-itus curse was Irishstone who had her debut race today at Kempton Park. In a race full of famous silks and well respected trainers, we were just hoping for a good experience for her and that she would learn something from it. We have always liked this filly, she is a petite yet very well put together young lady and she has the most beautiful action. From a pretty slowly run race she managed to come between horses and just as she grabbed the leader, she herself was grabbed on the outside. The finish went to the judge and we had been beaten a head but what a remarkable first run. She will have a great deal of experience under her belt from this run and I don’t suppose she will have a 25-1 price on her head for a while!
30 minutes later Prince Alzain also made his debut at Kempton. Although breaking the second-itus run, it was a notch down instead of up! No complaints what so ever from us though as running into the winners enclosure on a debut run is always a bonus. He looked to be fairly green in the early stages of the race and was running in snatches but once the gap opened up for him, he ran on very nicely with bags full of promise. He got the better of horses who were much more experience than he was and as with Irishstone, the experience of today’s race will benefit him hugely.

Maristar went for a canter around Hawthorn racetrack on Saturday. She is due to run there in the first week of October in the “Hawthorn Handicap”, a Group 2 for colts and fillies on the dirt. She handled the track and surface very well. A little too well actually as I had to give Andrew a speeding ticket before he got really carried away! So it was very pleasing to see her going so well there ahead of this big race.
Pachattack is fresh and well and still on track to run in Keenland in a few weeks.
